Clonidine also may cause bradycardia, probably by increasing signaling through the vagus nerve. When given intravenously, clonidine temporarily increases blood pressure by stimulating postsynaptic α2 receptors in smooth muscle in the lining of blood vessels. This does not occur when clonidine is given by mouth or transdermally. It has been in use as a medication since 1966.
