A similar protein in rodents plays a role in multiple biological processes as the rate-limiting enzyme in taurine biosynthesis| catalyzing the decarboxylation of cysteinesulfinate to hypotaurine. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding multiple isoforms have been observed for this gene.
